The Kiev Law Clinic for Refugees was established in 2000 with the support of UNHCR in Ukraine and the Law Students' Association. The clinic is affiliated with the Law Department of the Kiev National Taras Shevchenko University and has also collaborated with the International Renaissance Foundation and the American Bar Association's Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative.
The students of the clinic have a unique opportunity to attend a two-semester course taught by Docent of Constitutional and Administrative Law, Mr. Yugen Gerasymenko.
Theoretical knowledge is then put to practice during the four-month internships at the UNHCR office in Kiev, the State Committee of Ukraine in Matters of Nationalities and Migration, the state administration departments dealing with nationalities and migration, or at the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, which provide refugees with legal assistance and counseling.
At present, the clinic's work is supervised by Docent Mr. Gerasymenko and Mr. Viktor Skopintsev, manager of the clinic. Participation in the Kiev Law Clinic for Refugees is recognized as a part of the law school curriculum.
The Kiev Law Clinic for Refugees works closely with the other legal clinics operating in Ukraine. It trains over 25 students each year, teaching them how to conduct interviews with clients, maintain files, carry out legal research and provide counseling.
