Description

The Kosice Asylum Law Clinic began operating in February 2002. The initiative came from two faculty members of Kosice University, who - after the notion of clinical education was introduced to them - visited the Jagiellonian University Human Rights Center in Krakow to find out more about how to run a clinic. The proposed model was then approved by the deans of Kosice University.

The Kosice clinic cooperates with lawyers affiliated with the Society of Goodwill, who guide students in their work and represent the clinic's clients. Students are mainly involved in drafting applications for refugee status, counseling asylum seekers, conducting country of origin research, and drafting appeals.

Clinic Activities

In 2002 and 2003:

  • Students worked on over 30 cases.
  • They drafted appeals to the District Court in Kosice and to the Slovak Supreme Court.
  • In 4 cases they drafted applications for tolerated residence of unsuccessful asylum seekers, and in 2 cases appeals on detention of separated children.
  • Students visited the refugee camps located in the middle Slovak Region once a month to provide on-the-spot legal counseling to asylum seekers requesting legal advice, providing legal counseling to over 75 asylum seekers.
